Overview

The Brixton Splat Tour is an interactive map showcasing five iconic landmarks across Brixton, each captured as a high-quality Gaussian splat model. Users click hotspots on an aerial map view to explore 3D models in modal windows, complete with historical context and the ability to rotate and zoom through each scene.

The aerial map itself is a Gaussian splat created from Google Earth's 3D town center view—a creative workaround that transforms rough satellite data into a navigable 3D environment. This provides an overhead perspective that contextualizes each landmark's position within Brixton's urban fabric.

The Five Landmarks

🎨

David Bowie Mural

Expert capture technique preserving stunning reflections and surface details—a technically challenging splat showcasing professional photogrammetry skills.

St. Michael's Church Fountain

Ground-based capture of the historic church fountain, preserving architectural and water feature details.

🎫

Station Ticket Shop

Interior/exterior capture of the distinctive ticket shop inside Brixton station.

📞

90s Telephone Boxes

Two vintage telephone boxes standing side-by-side on the high street—relics from a pre-mobile era.

🗿

Henry Tate Bust

Sculpture of the library's founder outside the building he established, captured with a distinctive black bag on its head.

Creative Aerial Solution

The aerial map view required a creative approach. Using Google Earth's 3D visualization of Brixton town center, I screen-recorded multiple orbital camera movements around the area. This footage was then processed through Kiri Engine to generate a Gaussian splat from the screen recording.

After cleanup in SuperSplat editor, the result is a navigable overhead view that provides geographic context for each landmark. The final export was optimized to the smallest possible file size without sacrificing visual quality—critical for web performance when serving 3D assets.

Interactive Experience

The interface presents users with the aerial splat map as the base layer. Hotspot markers indicate each landmark location. Clicking a hotspot opens a modal window where visitors can freely explore the 3D Gaussian splat model—rotating, zooming, and examining details from any angle.

Each modal includes historical information about the landmark, providing educational context alongside the immersive 3D experience. This combination of geographic navigation and detailed 3D exploration creates an engaging way to discover Brixton's cultural heritage.

Technical Stack

Ground-based splats were captured using camera-based photogrammetry with professional technique—particularly evident in the David Bowie mural capture where reflections and surface details are preserved with exceptional clarity. The aerial base map was created through an innovative Google Earth screen recording workflow.

All splats were processed through Kiri Engine, cleaned up in SuperSplat editor, and optimized for web deployment. The interactive map interface handles hotspot interactions and modal-based 3D viewers for each landmark.
